How to cook black rice – Instructions & Tips

Black rice is a popular healthy alternative to other grains. When cooked, it has a nutty flavor to it and a deep purple color. It is actually easy to cook though it does not cook well in a rice cooker.

Here is how to prepare it.

Put the black rice in a bowl and rinse it with water. Rub it in your hands to remove surface starches so they will not stick when you cook it. Discard the rinse and add water again to repeat the process. Rinse it two or three times.

After rinsing, add water again and leave it overnight so they don’t form a solid mass when cooked. If this is not possible, you can cook right after you rinse it.

To cook it, remember the 1:2 ratio. One cup of rice to 2 cups of water. You can also use broth to give it a saltier taste. Once you have added the water or broth to the rinsed rice, let it boil. When it boils, bring the heat down and cook it over low fire for 20 to 35 minutes. After all the water is absorbed, turn off the heat and let it rest for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, use a fork to fluff it out so the grains will separate. Just note that it may stain ceramic or enamel pots.

Black rice may be used in cold salads, instead of pasta. Just toss black rice with your favorite vegetables and add some dressing. It can also be added to your regular stuffing recipe. If you are tired of having potatoes or bread with your protein, black rice is a healthier side dish alternative. You can even make it into a dessert by mixing in cream, cinnamon, and sugar.

Enjoy the health benefits of black rice.
